Thiyaagi Dhilipan Remembrance Day
September 26, 1987 is a day in the history of Sri Lanka that stands out till date. Dhilipan is a highly renowned person in Sri Lanka. Every year, he is remembered for the sacrifice he made thirty seven years ago.
Courage and Bravery
Being a part of The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Dhilipan was possessed with deep commitment to creating an Independent state. In the attempt to create the Tamil Eelam state, Dhilipan fought against the Sri Lankan government. The young and passionate activist’s contribution during the Sri Lankan Civil war earned him the symbol of sacrifice.
He worked persistently to attract attention towards the injustice faced by Tamil people. His bravery stands as a symbol of inspiration for many young follow his ideals and stand up for the freedom of Tamil people.
With Mahatma Gandhi as an inspiration, he made the choice to no proceed with the protest in violence. His protests also set examples on how to lead without causing any physical harm. With the plan to protest, Dhilipan brought five demands to the Indian government’s notice. He began his fast on September 15, 1987. Refusing the consumption of water and food, he constantly fought for the rights of Tamil in Jaffna.
His protest attracted thousands of people, hoping to create some change for the future of Tamil Eelam. His protest lasted for a number of eleven days. His death sent shock waves across the nation. People mourned the unexpected death of the notable leader. Besides that, his sacrifices are still being looked upon as a reminder to help Tamil people live a life with basic human rights.
His act of courage represents his dedication to bringing autonomy for the Tamils. Although the issues addressed by Dhilipan still lacks acknowledgement his sacrifice has pushed many people to reflect.
Thiyaagi Dhilipan Remembrance day is held in the memory of the heroic young man. On this day we not just pay respect to Dhilipan but also remember and reflect on the cause he worked towards. It is a reminder to address the struggles of Tamil Eelam people with utmost urgency.
